This qualification reflects the role of individuals in the community, home or residential care setting who work under supervision and delegation as a part of a multi-disciplinary team, following an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason.

These individuals take responsibility for their own outputs within the scope of their job role and delegation. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.

The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.

This qualification is delivered over 945 hours, including 120 hours of practical placement. Participants enrolled in this course will have up to 48 weeks (including 20 hrs/per week of studying and excluding the holiday and term breaks) to complete the course requirements.

The course duration may vary for individual students based on their current academic and work experience. All students will be assessed on an individual basis for their ability to meet the course requirements within an extended or reduced timeframe.

This qualification will be delivered using a combination of online-based theoretical delivery and other student participation methods. This will include classroom sessions, directed self-study, skills training, self-paced learning, assessment assistance and supervised practical placement experience in a community and/or residential setting to build on participant’s knowledge and skills on-the-job.

The theoretical online sessions in the individual units of competency may include participation in skills training and practice training, scenarios and projects, reports, student learner guides, audio-visual aids, and technology as learning tools to build student performance knowledge further. The Training and Assessment ensure that students have adequate time to learn the topics and opportunities for reinforcement and complete and submit challenging tasks required for assessment purposes.

A variety of presentation types may include eLearning resources and classroom-style delivery for those students requiring assistance. Such methods are well suited to present fundamental and theoretical knowledge.

The effectiveness of the training sessions involving student participation is encouraged, including class sizes from 5 to 25 students. These restrictions will maximise trainer/student interaction during training.

Successful completion of this qualification will enable you to progress to CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support, CHC43121 – Certificate IV in Disability Support or HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing.

Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who may:

• Be actively seeking employment in a community and/or residential setting.
• Have no formal qualifications in aged care
• Wish to review/update knowledge and practical experience.
• Be seeking a new career

• There are no specific pre-requisite requirements for entry to the qualification as per the Training Package.ALACC policy requires:
  • The Learner must be 18 years or over
  • Have satisfactorily completed Year11 or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English literacy and numeracy skill that meets industry requirements as a part of Certificate III in Dental Assisting Course. Refer to ALACC policy on English Language Proficiency.
  • A Pre-training Review is conducted with the Learner to identify Language, Literacy and Numeracy levels, any disability that may affect your learning and to ascertain support that may be required during your study period.

Students may be able to decrease the length of their studies if they wish to. Recognition of past-experience and/ or qualifications gained elsewhere is also acknowledged. Applications can be made for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer.  These will be assessed according to the college’s policy & procedures to determine if/how much advanced standing will be granted. This qualification holds National Recognition.

ALACC recognises AQF qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by any other Registered Training Organisation in Australia. Students may request total credit for a whole unit or qualification based on study in an identical unit or qualification at another institution. Suitable documentation such as a Statement of Attainment/ Transcript of results must be provided when applying for Credit Transfer.  Applications can be made for Credit Transfer (CT) via online form from ALACC website or Student Portal.

Assessments will be conducted to determine the student learning outcomes and to finalize the achievement of the competency-based learning outcomes. Assessments may include student questions, case studies, projects, practice activities, skills demonstration and on the job role environment / practical placement environment tasks.

Upon completing this course, students may gain employment within a community and/or residential setting in the aged home and community care sector.

Occupational titles may include Disability Support Workers, Personal Care Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Personal Care Giver, Care Worker, Accommodation support worker, Assistant in Nursing, Care Assistant, Community care worker, community support worker, home care assistant, In-home respite worker, Residential care worker or Support worker.

To achieve this qualification, the learner must have completed at least 120 hours of work placement as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the Units of Competency.

ALACC takes the responsibility to find practical placements and will negotiate with individual providers and ensure an agreement is in place. For security reasons, students cannot undertake their practical work placements without a valid agreement between ALACC and the Placement Providers.

Students who wish to use their current place of work if relevant to the course, must discuss with the ALACC course coordinator and provide evidence of current work as per our placement process. An Agreement will be sent to the facility after negotiating with the Placement Provider.

Students going on work placements will be required to provide relevant documentation to enter the facility such as police check, mandatory immunisation and COVID booster vaccination. Students allergic to the latter must provide evidence.

Cancellation of work placements by the student will attract a minimum payment of the administrative cost of $70 unless a medical certificate is provided. The student placement may be delayed to allow time for the Placement coordinator to find another work placement.

An orientation session will be provided to students prior to commencing their study. ALACC offers student support services as per ALACC student support policy and helps with both academic and non-academic matters as applicable.
